Hopefully this isn’t a portent of things to come…I actually neglected to post my workouts for last Tuesday/Wednesday! Yep, the whole purpose of my keeping this blog and it completely skipped my mind. So here’s the reader’s digest version (since I don’t have my Polar on me, these aren’t totally accurate):
Wednesday Jan. 22, 2008
Distance: 2.75KM
Time 00:35:20
Pace: 12:48 min/km
Calories: 306
Average HR: (this is from memory) 114
Max HR: 144
I really focused on trying to keep my heart rate floating around the peak of my 60% max for a Zone 1 workout - around 119. However, since my heart and body haven’t totally recovered from my bout with the flu earlier this month, I found my HR climbing faster and higher than usual, so I backed off and wound up speed-walking almost all of my workout. Mind you, I felt good when I finished - definitely a 10-12 R.P.E. which is exactly where I should be.
Wednesday Jan. 23, 2008
Distance: 300m swim
Time: 21 minutes
I introduced Cin to my favourite pool in the entire Lower Mainland - the West Van Aquatic Center. We learned that Wednesday evenings around 6:30 or so are fabulous times to head over there - we had an entire lane to ourselves, and I could flail away without worrying about bashing into anyone or anybody really noticing how uncoordinated I am right now as I attempt to get my stroke back. Another significant advantage to having a whole lane to ourselves; I was able to relax, and towards the end of my workout, I was experimenting with my elbow angle, the feel of my hand ‘pulling’ the water, my glide…being able to take that kind of time without someone bowling me over in the lane was exquisite. Granted I was swimming 25 meters, stopping to let my heart rate go back to normal (about 60 seconds) then swimming another 25M, so my overall time was incredibly disappointing. Even though I’m no longer doing the UBC Tri, I’m still training like I am, and the cutoff for the short course swim is 20 minutes at 400 meters. I’ve got some work to do. Right now, I’m considering private lessons at the WVAC. Cin, on the other hand, shows absolutely no sign that the swim is going to give her problems - she was a competitive swimmer and diver when she was a kid, before genetics piped up and she was blessed with…..huge…..tracts of land, and even then, she worked as a lifeguard for the City of Port Coquitlam during the summer breaks from school at SFU. She’s never really lost her stroke or her abilities in the water, and I’m insanely jealous. She’s going to seriously kick some ass in six weeks.
